In Memoriam: Don Reid

Donald Thomas Reid was a family man, a union man, and a Democrat. He was superbly passionate about each one.

Don came to Hendersonville from Ohio. He had worked in the auto plants in Michigan then became a union representative. Donald first came to Hendersonville driving a 1980's tired-looking Ford. It turned out, as a member of UAW leadership, he came up with an idea that averted a strike. Ford Motor Co. gave him the car in appreciation. His many accomplishments made a difference in the lives of his union brothers and sisters.

When he came to Hendersonville, he continued to put his organizing skills to work in the Democratic Party. He connected with folks from all walks of life. He knew the power of a vote. He believed our lives could be better through more compassionate laws. Don went from being a Vice-chair to becoming Chairman of the Party during his time here. Most recently, he was President of the Senior Democrats. He never gave up on his mission of helping others. He always brought in speakers from non-profits so they could talk about what their organization was doing for our community.

He stayed President of the Senior Democrats even through his cancer treatments.

On a personal note, Don was my friend. We were always there for each other. He gave me a book on Robert's Rules. Obviously, I didn't read it but he wanted to make me better. I offered to be the secretary of the Seniors because he needed one. There were many instances like that over the years. Above all else, we could count on each other. I'm going to miss my friend. I'm happy he isn't suffering from that awful disease anymore.

Rest well, Don.
