The GOP's Courtroom Coup: 66,000 Voters on the Chopping Block

Justice Allison Riggs won her election. Not once — but twice. Two separate recounts confirmed her victory in the race for North Carolina’s Supreme Court. But that hasn’t stopped the North Carolina GOP from trying to overturn the will of the voters.
With help from a Republican-majority panel on the Court of Appeals, they’re now attempting to throw out more than 66,000 legally cast ballots. In a 2-1 partisan decision, the court ruled that voters whose registrations may not meet new standards — standards that didn’t even exist when they voted — must now jump through new hoops to make their voices count.
If the ruling stands, these voters will be given just 15 days to appear in person at their local board of elections, show a valid photo ID, and update their registration. Let’s be very clear: this is not about voter integrity. It’s about voter suppression — targeting ballots after they’ve been cast in an attempt to hand a loss back to a Republican challenger, Jefferson Griffin, who couldn’t win at the ballot box.
The message from the court is chilling: democracy is conditional — and they get to decide the conditions.
This is a courtroom coup. An attack on the legitimacy of our elections. And it threatens the foundation of fair representation in our state.
We’re not sitting back. We’re preparing right now to reach every single affected voter if this ruling is allowed to stand. When the time comes, we’ll need a massive volunteer effort to help voters cure their ballots within that narrow 15-day window.
