Weekend Joe – Ladies, They Are Coming After Our Right to Vote

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, currently in Congress, could cost you your right to vote—especially if you changed your name when you got married.

This disturbing Project 2025-related effort claims to prevent non-citizens from voting. It was introduced last year but did not come to a vote. Now, it’s back on the docket for 2025.

A Solution in Search of a Problem

Despite claims from the president and many Republicans that non-citizens are voting in high numbers, there is no data to support this. It is already illegal for non-citizens to vote, and instances of illegal voting are so rare that they are statistically insignificant—like a single snowflake in a blizzard.

Yet, in attempting to "fix" this non-problem, the SAVE Act would make it harder for all Americans to register or update their voter registration. It would require citizens to present, in person, documentation proving their citizenship.

What Does This Mean for You?

If passed, the law would require a passport or birth certificate in your current legal name to prove citizenship.

  • 146 million Americans do not have a passport.

  • 79% of women married to men have changed their last name.

  • 4 million men have changed their name after marriage.

These individuals do not have a birth certificate that matches their legal name. If you can’t provide one, you can’t register to vote or update your registration.

If You’re Already Registered, Are You Safe?

For now—unless you move, marry, divorce, or change your name.

Even worse, the president would have the power to declare voter registrations “questionable” and purge them at will. Imagine a scenario where an administration targets voter registrations in states that don’t typically vote Republican. Sound far-fetched? So did a losing judge fighting to throw out 60,000 votes in North Carolina.

Project 2025 and Voter Purges

Project 2025 aims to give the federal government access to state voter rolls, allowing them to aggressively purge registrations. If you are removed from the voter rolls and don’t have a passport or birth certificate in your current name, you may not be able to re-register.

If you’re cynical like me, you might suspect that this is deliberately targeting women’s voting rights—especially as more women become outraged by executive orders and policies that directly harm us.

And this is only the beginning. Trump is already implementing Project 2025 ideals through executive orders. If you haven’t yet, read this CNN overview from January 31:🔗 CNN: Trump’s Project 2025 Executive Orders
