The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, currently in Congress, could cost you your right to vote—especially if you changed your name when you got married.
This disturbing Project 2025-related effort claims to prevent non-citizens from voting. It was introduced last year but did not come to a vote. Now, it’s back on the docket for 2025. Read more on this Weekend Joe post.
What Does This Mean for You?
If passed, the law would require a passport or birth certificate in your current legal name to prove citizenship.
146 million Americans do not have a passport.
79% of women married to men have changed their last name.
4 million men have changed their name after marriage.
These individuals do not have a birth certificate that matches their legal name. If you can’t provide one, you can’t register to vote or update your registration.
